TITLE: Buyer
REPORTS TO: Purchasing Manager
BASED AT: Harken, Inc., Pewaukee, WI
STATUS: Full Time, 1st shift, Exempt


  • Order, schedule and monitor materials to ensure proper inventory levels to meet customer demand. 
  • Procurement of manufacturing materials consisting of metals, plastics, & components to supply machining operations.   
  • Sourcing for new products.
  • Facilitate efficient and cost effective sourcing initiatives by developing suppliers for quality improvement, cost reduction and timely delivery.
  • Maintain supplier delivery schedules and expedite as necessary.
  • Review inventory requirements, order policies and ensure stocking levels to support demand. 
  • Evaluate quotes and review costs on a regular basis. Negotiate supplier pricing. 
  • Work with internal customers, i.e. customer service, engineering, manufacturing, quality and accounting to streamline processes in support of customer service excellence.  
  • Resolve receipt and invoicing discrepancies.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum 10 years buying experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain or equivalent business related field, preferred.  
  • Experience with procurement of raw material preferred.
  • CPM or APICS certification desired.
  • Working knowledge of MRP Buyer/Planners for material planning and inventory control with working knowledge of BOMs, routings and drawings.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Team-oriented and able to work in cross functional teams.
  • Positive attitude with strong problem solving skills and a sense of urgency.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize multiple assignments to meet deadline and goals despite unexpected setbacks, obstacles or time constraints.
  • Team player able to interact in a positive, constructive manner with staff members on all levels within the company.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs, i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Publisher.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, feel or handle objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands or arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Must be able to walk or stand on concrete for up to 4 hours at a time. 
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to focus.
